:He is ridable as I have rode him, and he is gentle once he is caught. But he is a royal pain when being caught. I believe he is a young horse, and he has not been messed with alot.:

It seems everytime I buy a new horse they have a problem with being caught but within a year they at least stand if not come up to me. Right now I have a yearling colt that had never seen people to train. My 7 are out in a large pasture so chasing them around is impossible. What's worked best for me is just following at a walk. First I try to keep the distance close to 20 ft. They speed up you walk faster they slow down then you slow down. After a few mins they will slow way down or start to hesitate( it's never taken more than 10 min with a saddlebroke horse). Then I stop and usually turn away a little, pet a horse nearby or even walk off. Then I walk toward them again, 90 percent of the time I can get closer this time than the first time and sometimes walk all the way up to them. Try to stop before they move off but if they do just follow again till they stop. When you finally get close enough pet the horse maybe feed a small treat and walk off(I don't like using treats unless I have a horse that is very nervous or afraid). If all you wanted was to pet him then maybe being caught isn't so bad and walking around and around the pasture sure wasn't fun. I might catch them later and ride or just leave it at that but doing that once a day for a week I've had few horses I couldn't walk up to and most start following me around the pasture. Fair warning this may take lots of patience and possibly lots of time depending on the horse also a smaller pen is better, but I never was a fan of round pen work.
