Sounds like you'll be doing the right thing with him, from your post its pretty clear you have a good head on your shoulders :)

I had a mare I bought when she was 20, same problem only impounded by 20 years of having nothing done with her but roping and working. It took me 4 years before I could actually walk up to her in the pasture and touch her nose without first working up from her shoulder (it took a year before I could easily walk up to her shoulder!). I didn't push the issue, she was there for me as a broodmare and pet. It was a new thing for her to be someone's pet and took some getting used to on her part but now, almost 6 years later, I can go out and do about anything with her without her trying to get away....well, except worming. But that's another story, LOL! You'd be surprised how spunky an old arthritic mare can get when she thinks you have dewormer on you!
