::Hi all

::Just in case Erin ... or anyone.. should check in here... I thought I'd throw out a topic that has been discussed at our group lately... Does anyone have a Rider Rotation Policy?? We are concerned with how to deal with a waiting list ... what does your center do on these issues?

:Hi Robin-

:I have a question that kind of pertains to your waiting list! It came to me as I was reading your post and got me to wondering...does your group have certain "criteria" that designates the who qualifies for your program and who doesn't? And if so, are there people who are "more" qualified? I mean, do you try to go by who you can help the most, or do you just follow the list as first come first serve?

Hi Cody

All centers have guidelines for who will ride. Many health issues can be contraindications to riding, as I'm sure you can imagine, and all centers should be guided by those. Individual centers need to have their professionals follow those guidelines. NARHA's Accreditation Manual has a section on Precautions and Contraindications. Beyond those issues however, centers may be limited by their available ponies/horses or OTs/PTs, depending on the rider's needs. So, I guess the answer to your question is that riders are placed on a first come first serve with a qualification for the above limitations... availability of appropriate pony/professional if it applies. For instance... currently our program has an abundance of medium ponies available to our use (we do not own any animals, all are loaned to us) so we are limited in weight bearing to our Icelandic wonder mare and she is currently fully booked for the program. If an adult over 100 lbs were to apply to us right now, we would need to put that rider on our wait list and that would then engage our current rotation policy. The current rider would finish their 2nd semester with us, rotate out, reappy, and as soon as the next rider had completed 2 semesters (3 if a Hippotherapy rider), start riding again (if wonder mare or another appropriate mount is available). You can be pretty assured that all centers try to get all applicants riding ASAP, but these limitations do bug us all.

That's probably more than you needed to know :) Thanks for your interest.

Robin
