Congratulations! You are in for a treat, but you are right, it is very scary and there are many things that can go wrong. First thing is to try to narrow down when she is due to foal. I advise to get a vet to palpate or ultrasound, they can get a better idea for you. It is unlikely that she is due Jan/Feb if she was pasture bred, as most mares do not cycle until the days get longer, so it is more likely she is due between March and June. Next prepare for the foaling to count on being there. Get a close circuit TV camera, many are affordable now and can work on your own TV. Then you can watch her all night. Also, be sure to put her in a stal at night, so she is under your watch.
When she is getting ready to foal, her bag will fill and when she is close, the nipples will point straight down. Now not all minis follow the rules and some will not have milk before they foal. Another sure sign is that the ligaments around the tail head will relax and become soft and droopy. There are so many signs, read Blessed are the Broodmares, this is the best book on foaling out there.
