The previous owners told me that they pasture bred her from the end of February to the end of July and were not sure when she took. This is a first for me, haven't got a clue when she is really due, have gone out and bought a couple of books on foaling. But, it's still really scary. I need some input please, from some of you with much more experience than myself. Helpful hints on what to look for, etc.......... : : Congratulations! You are in for a treat, but you are right, it is very scary and there are many things that can go wrong. First thing is to try to narrow down when she is due to foal. I advise to get a vet to palpate or ultrasound, they can get a better idea for you. It is unlikely that she is due Jan/Feb if she was pasture bred, as most mares do not cycle until the days get longer, so it is more likely she is due between March and June. Next prepare for the foaling to count on being there. Get a close circuit TV camera, many are affordable now and can work on your own TV. Then you can watch her all night. Also, be sure to put her in a stal at night, so she is under your watch. : Just wanted to say... I purchased a mare Yesturday April 15th/2002. And she is most definaltely pregnant. This is my first horse ever. And her nipples are leaking. Also pointing straight down. However, the pasture is almost 35 minutes from us. I am very nervous! Can horses deliver on their own. If they have too? Yes if they have to,then they will i mean hey they used to before humans were here.but, she might need some help.but dont worry i would go by a small baby moniter in her stall for when shes asleep that way if she wakes up and is haveing in shell probally nay.
