to shalyce: : We are thinking about buying a few mini's, but trying to decide on the colors : : Thanks Kyle : By all means, it is very difficult to predict what you will get when breeding miniatures! Because of the short time the registries have been in effect, the genetic backgrounds of minis is vague. This is what determines most of the colors of your horse's offspring, not the coat patterns of the parents. If you breed two colored horses together, you are likely to get colored foals, but no guarantee. With Pintos, you can do a blood test for a homozygous pinto marker. This means that the horse will only produce pintos, no matter what it is bred to. With appaloosas, many do not show their color until they mature, so many appy foals are born dark and color later. Your best bet when purchasing your minis, is to deal with a reputable breeder who has been breeding for a while. This way they will have good records of the background of their horses and know the possibilities they may produce. Most importantly, breed for quality, not color, you can always add the paint job later!
