:Many people misunderstand this concept, and they try to actually turn the horses head with the reins by pulling the horses head with the rein - crossing the neck.

:Now, as to the best for kids...that's a debatable subject but I'll tell you how I teach them...

Now to fix the title to my Ask the Vet link, LOL...that's what I get for only drinking one cup of coffee this morning! Goodness, its going to be a rough day if I can't get through the morning...
