Just take a spray bottle and mix 1 part baby oil with 3 parts listerine mouthwash (or its generic equivalent). This will make the hairs slippery and easier to untangle without breaking the hairs. It is also nonharmful to the tail and won't dry it out. Good luck!
Whenever I mess with tails, I do one of two things. Either I use one of my soft brushed just to get the shavings and dirt out, or if there's tangles to be dealt with, I use a "secret" formula I learned in college ::::grinning::::
