Thinking about a Horse

I have always wanted a Horse. Since a small girl in fact --- it was the constant, I want a pony for Christmas. Well, now I am a big girl and I am thinking VERY seriously about one. Hey, if I can't give myself a present, who can, right?
So, what advice would you give me? I love to ride, but am not real experienced. I have a pasture and barn available to me to use, so "housing" will be covered. But I am just now starting to reallly research this and I don't want to jump in and do stuff wrong.
I want a horse that is good for me and I want to be good to the horse.
