Poo is good; no poo is bad.

First off, have you talked to your vet? He/she really is your best source for the answer to your question.

Factors to consider and observations you need to make.

What kind of horse do you have and how old is it? I have an QH appendix more thoroughbred than QH. His metabolism is high and he's 16! He poops a lot. He's a hardkeeper, but healthy. The other horse I have is also a QH appendix, but more QH than thoroughbred and is 6. He doesn't poo as much.

What's the poo look like? Runny, wormy, grainy, dry, mushy, etc.? Or is it normal?

What are you feeding? Do you provide a free feed mineral supplement? Do you put oil in the feed?

Water--are you monitoring the consumption? If you don't use buckets and are on the automatic watering system, be extra sure you monitor the poo for moisture. If the horse ain't pooing or eating, and if any poo you find is extremely dry, then you may need to tube the horse and put water in him--been there done that when a trainer didn't notice my horse was dehydrated. $600 in vet bills. Be SURE to monitor the water intake.

Exercise--is the horse in pasture or turned out everyday? Excersing can certainly work it loose.

Remember, a horses digestive system is low in enzymes, but the gastric acids are strong. Their bodies take what they need and get rid of the rest. The sooner you get the waste out of their system, the better. You don't want the food to sit in their intestines...baceteria will set in and then your up a creek. If the poo is normal, no need to have the vet rush right out. But do call and get an his/her opinion. You never know, there could be something wrong, especially if this is abnormal without having changed feed or exercising habits.

I supplement my feedstuff with ABC Plus from Advanced Biological Systems. It helps the horse to fully utilize the feeds. May or may not be for your horse. Again, ask your vet.

: I find that when I go to the barn in the morning, my horse will have left me at least 3 piles of manure and that is just from one nite. I feel that he isn't utilizing his food very well if he is going that much. What can I do for that? Thanks
