Facial Abscesses

Our yearling colt came up yesterday suddenly with multiple draining facial abscesses. Near his eye, on his cheek and more forming on his head and behind his ear. We noticed them as they were draining. Rushed to the vet, 102.7 fever. He did not present any of the usual symptoms of "strangles" and all of our horses are current with their vaccines... Quaranteened him and treated agressively with penicillin and on second day fever is down... Any Ideas?
