Liquid leaking from rectum

A couple of mths ago, my horse (8yr paint gelding) started leaking a dark liquid from his rectum. Had the vet out, did tests couldn't find anything! Blood work fine, stools fine, everything was great except for this. Horse is white, so it stained legs...yuck.
I put him on Sand Clear for a mth. He cleared up, then I used Bran daily. Everything good for a mth. Then 9-9-03 he was shaking in stall in a.m. drawing feet up. Watched him for couple of hours, he was fine, that afternoon he started leaking again. Vet said to put on Sand Clear for a week out of every mth, for 3 mths to see. Then if it still continues, he may do a biopsy of his colon.

Has ANYONE every heard of such a thing? The vet is stumped. I think it could be stress induced. I don't have much history on him. Any info would be greatly appreciated!!!!
