The weight you list is not enough to cause him pain. You should make sure there is no pain in his back from the fit, the pad, arthritis or soreness in his back. Make sure his back is clean and free of any signs of swelling, scabs, or other problems. Does he do this with other saddles? If his back seems fine, then perhaps a thicker or softer pad is needed.
