Lumpy APHA Mare

There is an 11 year old paint mare where I work with growing lumps that very much concern me. She is swollen on both shoulders, although one is now larger than a grapefruit, she has about an orange-sized growth at the top of her neck but behind the poll, and while checking her this afternoon, I discovered a small, grape-sized mass in the thyroid area. Could these be tumors? We first noticed her lumpiness in May and it has gotten progressively worse. The growths are firm, but they are not painful to her when I press them. The vet has looked at them several times with no ideas, but recently concluded that he belives it is a parasite infection. However, her owners are an older couple who are very set in their ways, and their vet is an old friend who has not actively practiced in ten years, so I don't give him a whole lot of credit (due to previous experiences). What could this be?
