Your mare could be suffering from a few different things. With the mammary gland you should be concerned with infection (mastitis), vascular obstruction (loss of proper blood flow from the gland), and glandular hyperplasia (hormonal or neoplastic growth). Check to see if she is running a fever, has any edema or fluid swelling, or pain in the gland, then you may treat accordingly.
