My gelding is 22 this year and he has had heaves for a few years now due to the owner of the barn (my mother)feeding crappy hay. Well she's doing it again and he seems to be worse, coughing alot, and lately he's been having a hard time breathing "his nostrils are flared and I can hear him breathing sorta heavy + he has had a small amount of clear discharge from his nose that comes and goes. My mother says it's probably alergies because the other horses arent reacting the same way and they are eating the same hay, but I'm not so sure.
My question is first what do you think, and is there somthing I can give him to help with the cough and breathing if it is the heaves? Oh, and will continuing to feed the dusty hay hurt him any more than it already has? She thinks that because he is so old and not used any more that it isnt worth it to buy good hay untill the old stuff is gone.
