Prednisone will cause suppression of the immune system. This is why it is effective in suppressing signs of allergies and inflammation. Could he have developed an infection while on the prednisone?
Long term prednisone can lead to laminitis. Does he have sore feet?
Quickly or suddenly stopping prednisone can cause depression as the horse will initially be cortisol deficient.
I would have him examined for potential side effects and treated as needed.
