:Hi all, I have an MFT that has been out of work for awhile and need some conditioning advice. I plan on riding everyday for 2 to 5 hours and am going to be doing A LOT of trotting and cantering and some galloping. I also plan to enter ride and tie, thank you for any help.
Hi. I'm a long time CTR and endurance rider. One thing I can tell you is that you don't want to overtrain! The key is Long Slow Distance. Work on the miles, how far you can go. Then when you get comfortable with the distnace, start adding speed.
I'd also say to learn to pace yourself and horse. Use a watch and ride for a mile at your normal pace. how long did it take you? 5 mph is 12 minutes, 6 mph is 10 minutes, 7 mph is 6.5 minutes.
I'd suggest training at 5 to 6 mph to start out. And do lots of hill work. Hills build your horse's rear engine and his lungs and heart. Don't race up hills. Walk or trot up.
Use a stethoscope to know your horse's resting heart rate and his recovery rate.
Hope this helps.
