Welcome to the HorseHobbyist!! We're glad you've found us :)

I agree that Dressage is not just a stylish form of riding - dressage is the essence of being a horseback rider. Anyone who has ever learned to ride in any discipline has learned some basic dressage, even if it was not called that as it was taught to them. Dressage literally means "basic schooling". And we both know that every horse out there who has ever been ridden had some basic schooling!

Unfortunately, the term dressage has indeed come to describe its own form of a riding discipline, and becomes more and more disassociated from other types of riding as the years go by. Now there are specific "types" of horses that are looked for to show, and of course the trendy fads if style that go along with it. I guess these changes are inevitable and happen to all disciplines. I just find it sad, regardless of the discipline that often times, its not the horse that did the job correctly that necessarily wins the day - its the one that fits the perceived style.

But that's a discussion for another day :)
