Tigger turned a year old on April 1 2002. He now stands 15 hands and his butt is still two inches higher than the rest if him :-)
Its not the basic commands that I worry about ..to me ..all that stuff is easy. I am worried about the wrong cue for dressage. I play with him out in the pasture..and I have already been able to get him to bow. I am worried however that my tactics for getting him to do it may in the future hender his training..as in..the cue I use now for him to bow..may not be the appropriate cue and will cause me to have to retrain him at a later date.
Out in the pasture..I will gently run my hand down his leg as him to pick up his foot...but..instead..I will aply preasure and lean back myself...and he will inturn do the same ..bringing that foot under his body and his other extended...so that it looks like we are bowing together...at the same time I will tell him ..bow.
He does it really well..and again..seems to really enjoy it. I guess what I am really wondering is...Is it ok to be teaching him these things right now. He seems to eager to learn. I would love to work with him on side stepping ..the Spanish Walk and all of the other amazing parts to Dressage..but..I don't know the cues..and I can't seem to find a trainer in my area to help me.
I purchased Tigger because I fell in love with the breed. I had no idea how strong the desire would be within him to do dressage.. I have to background in it..I don't even know anyone in this area who does it. The woman I purchased Tigger from is wonderful... and I would really like to make her proud by letting Tigger show himself to the world. I just don't know how to do it.

:If he really really wants to work, you CAN free longe him in a large enclosed arena and teach him the voice commands for walk, trot, canter, woah, etc. This will let him kinda do what he wants but also teach him that he has a job and that he can do his job.

:Your fears arent unwarranted. Thats why i dont take young horses in training, someone else has to teach them to walk trot canter and stop before I'll get on them for their owners, because putting a horse on the bit is easy, its teaching the basic cues thats more difficult. At least in my opinion. You CAN teach him to dround drive lightly, or take him places like shows and things just to socialize him and get him used to the sites and sounds, etc.

:Other than that, i'd just play with him and mess with him as much as you can. How old is he exactly? If hes a long yearling, you can start getting him used to a bridle and longing caveson and surcingle and go from there.

:Hope that gave you a few ideas!
